AMBER HI-LITES
50 Years of Ion-Exchange Technology
By: Dr. Robert Kunin
First Printing 1996, ISBN 0-927188-07-4, 660 pages, hard cover, large format (81/2” x 11”,)

About the Book
Although a number of books on the subject of ion exchange have been written over a period of fifty years, this compendium of all the issues of amber-hi-lites, the bulletin of the Rohm and Haas Company on ion exchange resins, is unique in its scope. Many of the issues owe their origin to inquiries from those who have sought specific and general information on the technology of ion exchange. There is scarcely an industry or a home in which ion exchange is not involved. In fact, farmers around the world depend upon ion exchange phenomena for the growth of their crops and all life processes also depend upon ion exchange processes. This book is based upon 185 issues of amber-hi-lites and should be of use to all who are interested in the subject including analytical, physical, and industrial chemists, biochemists, agronomists, and nuclear researchers. The contents will also be of use to many executives and operating personnel.
The amber-hi-lites trace the development of ion-exchange technology through their distribution to the industry over fifty years. Covered, are areas of ion-exchange research and development that have not been published elsewhere, including catalysis, pharmaceuticals, sugar processing, adsorption and liquid-liquid extraction.

About the Author
Dr. Robert Kunin received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Rutgers University in 1939, and 1942, respectively. He began his career as an associate chemist with the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1942, and served as a senior scientist with the Manhattan District project at Columbia University during 1944 to 1945. From 1945 to 1946, he worked at Mellon Institute as a research fellow in the field of catalysis. Dr. Kunin was with the Rohm and Haas Co. from 1946 to 1976 as a laboratory head, research associate, senior staff associate, and a development manager of the Fluid Process Chemicals Department. After leaving Rohm and Haas, Dr. Kunin was a consultant, specializing in ion exchange, adsorption, water treatment, pollution control, and chemical processing. In the area of chemical processing, he had special expertise in the pharmaceutical, sugar, and chemical process industries. Dr. Kunin's main areas of research were in ion exchange, catalysis, adsorption and liquid-liquid extraction. During his lifetime, he wrote three other books, and approximately 350 articles and 40 patents in these fields are credited to him.
During his life, Dr. Kunin was also a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, the American University, and the University of Delaware. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemists, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Society for Testing and Materials, and Sigma Xi. Dr. Kunin passed away in January 2009 at the age of 90.
