Abstract

Thomas S. Rooney, Jr., has been the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Energy Recovery Inc. (ERI) since February 2011. During this time, he has worked to increase the firmメs market share for energy saving devices into the membrane desalination business from 50% in 2011 to 90% in 2013. Now, ERI is working actively to expand its pressure recovery technology into other industrial fluid markets such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and mining. ERI makes pressure recovery devices that are primarily used in seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) systems to recover unused pressure and create secondary pumps to reduce the overall energy consumption. Mr. Rooneyメs experience in water also includes serving as president and CEO of Insituform Technologies from 2003 to 2008. Insituform offers pipeline rehabilitation technologies for infrastructure improvements. Prior to joining ERI, Mr. Rooney was the president and CEO of SPG Solar, a solar photovoltaic integrator, starting in 2009. Mr. Rooney holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Cornell University, and an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago. This article is based on a recent interview by INDUSTRIAL WATER TREATMENT (IWT) with Mr. Rooney on different subjects related to ERI, the desalination business, and membrane systems.
