Abstract

Fouling of RO membranes in the water treatment plant at American Electric Power (AEP)-Rockport had necessitated cleaning cycles that were very short, reaching cycles times as low as once per week. These cleanings were considered to decrease membrane life. Experience with the membrane cleaning suggested that the fouling of the membranes occurred because of organics, and that a significant part of the fouling was microbiological in nature. The plant applied a number of diagnostics, including improved instrumentation upstream of the membranes, to improve RO system performance. This article will examine the work done to improve the water system operation.
