Abstract

Nanotechnology and the associated research fields of microelectronics and MEMS are highly competitive. When the design of Purdue Universityメs new Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) was initiated, the challenge was put forth to make all aspects of the facility モworld-classヤ. The design of the BNC fulfills its world-class status in many ways. The 25,000-square-foot (ft2) cleanroom is one of the largest at a college or university in the country. The clean room has Class 100, Class 10, and Class 1 zones, as well as an area configured as a Bio Safety Level 2 laboratory (BSL 2). The Class 1 and BSL 2 cleanroom areas are the only ones found at a university in the country. The facility also has 22,000-ft2 of モshirtsleeveヤ environment laboratories, including two モquiet roomsヤ that incorporate vibration isolation and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, which rivals the quiet rooms at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). High-purity nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and hydrogen are available throughout the facility. These design features have gained attention for the facility, and in 2009, Purdue had 161 nanotechnology based research contracts. The total value of these contracts exceeded $17 million, second in the number of research contract dollars awarded to a university for nanotechnology research.
