Abstract

The packed-bed demineralizers at one of the larger phosphate mines in Bartow, Fla., have been in continuous operation for some 35 years now. Although the units have provided billions and billions of gallons of deionized (DI) water over the years, their operation has been a challenge. The original internal distribution system design has been the source of many problems over the years, from resin leakage, to structural failures, to flow restrictions caused by resin fines. Controls and instrumentation have long since been converted from electro-mechanical type to PLC. However, the basic hardware is still the original equipment from the 1970s. This report chronicles the operation and maintenance of this aging deionizer.
