Abstract

In the first article of this series, which appeared in the May/June issue of Ultrapure Water magazine, the author discussed the value of water/steam treatment and chemistry audits for high-pressure steam generator systems (1). Unrecognized or overlooked issues can prove catastrophic if they allow a serious upset. Boiler tube failures have been known to occur within hours following a major incident. Equally important are audits/evaluations of cooling water and wastewater system operation and chemistry. Issues related to declining makeup water quality, and tighter regulations of plant discharges, are adding much complexity to treatment selection. Audits of existing systems, or detailed pre-planning for plants in the design phase, are absolutely critical for reliable performance, and for operation within the guidelines of the plant’s discharge regulations.
